Quatrefoil relief wyvern wall hanging - limited edition of five - THREE SOLD
By Tom Buchanan
Limited edition of 12
Cast sculpture in gesmonite
Unframed
Size: H:45cm x W:45cm
This original, individually cast Gothic revival wall hanging is perfect for our Eye of the Beholder Christmas show and exclusive to us.
A wyvern is a legendary dragon with two legs, commonly seen in heraldry and European folklore. The quatrefoil motif is found in art, architecture, heraldry and traditional Christian symbolism.
First modelled in clay, Tom then makes a silicone mould and casts the sculpture in gesmonite.
It is based on a design made by Augustus Pugin – the Arts & Crafts 'Gothic Revival' architect and designer who is well known in Tetbury for his part in designing the fabulously ornate, medieval-style St Saviour's Church just off the centre of the town.
The wyvern is coiled in the centre with leaves emerging from its body and filling each part of the quatrefoil. There are also dove's-foot crane's-bill geranium flowers in each corner.
Ideal to hang in a garden, conservatory or garden room*, the relief can be painted to match décor but looks great in its natural colour. An ideal Christmas gift.
All allusions to Games of Thrones and 'mother of dragons' (who got her dragons and two-legged wyverns rather confused) are purely coincidental.
* They are moderately frost proof but should be brought inside in the winter
